I would like to try some of these recipies, but i do not know what the items are or where to buy them.

If someone could give me a general English translation to the following items

jaggery(can i use regular sugar)
asafetida
chna dal
urad dal
saffron thread
besan (where do i get in us?)
tamarind paste
garam masala
