: I need to make empek-empek (Indonesian dish). It usually uses ikan tenggiri. Tenggiri fish.
: Until I can find out what is the English word for ikan Tenggiri, I can't spot it in the market/asian grocery store. If tenggiri is not available, I can also use ikan kakap. I also need to know what is the english word for it.
: thanks a lot.

I used to live in Kalimantan Barat in Indonesia, and I rmemeber Ikan Kakap as looking like a big sea perch
The Ikan Tenggiri is described at http://sg.org/tham.htm as 'Spanish Mackerel'

I was told you can make empek empek using the ready made fish paste that comes in tubs in the asian market. This tip was from a really good Indonesian cook!

: The English word for Tenggiri is MACKEREL.

Tenggiri can mean tenggiri papan/bunga (spotted mackerel - scomberomorus guttatus) or the more fancied tenggiri batang (spanish mackerel/narrow barred mackerel - scombremorus commerson)

Actually mackerel is used to refer to a group of species. Spotted mackerel, shark mackerel, narrowbarred mackerel and numerous other species are commonly called mackerel.

For recipes, the species referred to most times is the narrowbarred mackerel.

From an angler's point of view, kakap is actually siakap merah (lutjanus argentimaculatus) and tenggiri is spanish mackerel or narrow barred mackerel (scomboromerus commerson).

Siakap (or siakap putih) is the Malaysian equivalent to the Australian Barramundi. They are both share the scientific moniker Lates Calcarifer. At the market place, they are sold as siakap putih, siakap, seabass and seaperch.

ikan batang can't be milk fish. in the philippines milk fish is "bangus", in malaysia/singapore milk fish is
"ikan susu". susu means milk. ikan batang is mackerel.

Just because 'ikan Su Su'  translates to "milk fish" in Indonesian, does not mean that that is the English name, too... It's not.
