I don’t really know how to come out and say it but I have been thinking about it a lot. If you could help me at all or give me any information I would be so grateful. Okay, so my boyfriend who I have been dating for about 7 months in Laos. His parents were born there and him and his sister were born here in America. And I had been wondering what his parents and family think about his dating someone of another nationality. His aunt’s have married men from different nationality and my boyfriend tells me his parents don’t care what I am. But I worry that his family would approve more of someone Asian or Lao for that matter. But he and I love each other.
I really understand the culture well because I have done a lot of research on it and I even before dating him I had been thinking about converting to Buddhism. But I don’t want him or his family to think I am trying to be what I’m not. Asian. Growing up for me was interesting because I grew up knowing the American culture and the Mexican culture. And know that I know so much about the Asian culture it has really sparked my interest but I don’t want to offend his family.
Anyways this has really been on my mind but there has really been no one to ask. Please help me if you can I would appreciate so much.

Sincerely,

Anna

Anna,

Just my opinion, but I'd say don't worry. I don't think you need to do anything special. I'm married to a Thai woman, and she accepts me and my culture, as I accept hers. If the family has already had experience with foreign cultures, I'm sure you won't have any problems. Also, since your BF was born in America, he already is a American, and the American culture is his native culture now.

Frankly, I would venture to guess his parents would prefer you. You sound very sweet and considerate.

Best of luck to you
